Square (2001)
Wood
73”x 4”x4”
In the world of craft and building, it is foundational to establish a square, 90 degree relationship between the faces of your materials. To create this sculpture, I divided the form in half by eye by scoring it with a handsaw. I then rotated the 4″ x 4″ a quarter turn and scored the second face by eye attempting to keep the cut square to the cut on the first face. I rotated the wood another quarter turn and repeated the process. Once I cut the fourth face, my last cut reconnected with the cut on the first face. The degree to which I maintained square cuts around the 4″ x 4″ determined how the saw kerfs met on the final corner. I then proceeded to cut the overall form into quarters, eighths, and so on, repeating this process of squaring the wood each time. The surface was divided and redivided until the board could not be divided further.
