Replication Field (2003)
Wood, steel, graphite
18’ x 18’ x 72”
I began this immersive sculpture by attempting to cut a perfect rectangle on two axes from a 6”x6”x72” piece of wood. Then, I traced one axis of that initial form onto a second 6″x6″ and carefully attempted to cut a copy. I traced the second axis of that initial form onto a second 6″x6″ and again attempted to cut a copy. Each of those copies was then traced on a third and fourth wood blank, respectively. I again attempted to cut copies – now copies of copies. The process was repeated with each successive piece of wood along both axes of the grid. With the exception of the initial cut form, the form of each 6″x6″ is determined by two separate replication processes.
