Measure Series (1999-2001)

Modern science attempts to understand the world through measurement and the reduction of phenomena and matter to their smallest component parts. Likewise, in this series, I attempted to perform the ideals of drawing and cutting perfectly straight lines as a means to measure and divide forms into component parts.

To create this series, I repeatedly divided wood forms. The forms were cut by eye into non-standard units of measurement, first in half, then quarters, and so on. The accuracy of the division process was determined by both my ability to cut or draw straight lines and the limits of my materials. In many cases, the size of the initial wood form corresponded to the size of my body. In my attempt to measure my material and my ability to achieve an ideal, I literally created a measure of myself.
